Portuguese Sweet Bread 1 Recipe
Ingredients 2 pkts active dry yeast 1 cup plus 1 tsp granulated sugar 1/2 cup water, luke warm 4oz (113g) unsalted butter, soft 1/2 cup warm milk 4 eggs 1 tbsp salt 4 cup all purpose flour Method In large bowl, dissolve yeast and 1 tsp sugar in water and allow to proof. Put butter in warm milk, add the 1 cup sugar and blend well. Add to the yeast mixture and stir to combine the ingredients. Add 3 beaten eggs, salt and mix well. Add 4 cups flour, 1 cup at a time, kneading with hands in a bowl. Dough will be soft. Turn out onto a floured board and knead until the dough is smooth and elasticup Use extra flour when necessary to prevent sticking. Shape into a ball and put into a greased bowl, turning the dough to coat the surface with butter. Loosely cover and leave to rise until doubled in volume. Punch dough down and divide int half. Shape into balls and place on greased trays. Cover loosely and allow to rise again until doubled in volume. Brush tops with remaining beaten egg. Bake in a 350 degree oven for about 30 minutes or until bread is golden brown. Cool on wire rack. Cooks Comments and Tips . |
